Glimpse of the Future

Mother Nature sent a small reminder of what is to come. The snowy weather did not slow down final preparations at the farm though as we were busy putting some finishing touches on the fields. Opening day is Friday, November 28th and we look forward to seeing our customers and friends. The farm will be stocked with fresh, fragrant balsam fir Christmas trees as well as Maine-made wreaths and some accessories to complete your holiday decorating. In the meantime, we hope that everyone is enjoying the fall season and we look forward to seeing you soon.
A Tale of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Farming can be a tale of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good news is that everyone at Balsam Hill Farm is looking forward to reconnecting with our customers and friends when we open for a sixth season on Friday, November 28th at 10am. Preparations are coming to a close and we will have a selection of about seven-hundred fresh, fragrant balsam fir Christmas trees in sizes from table top to ten feet or more. The recent months were not without challenges as too much rain at one time in 2023 and again in April and May of this year followed by the drought conditions this summer and early fall wreaked havoc on many plant species including many varieties of conifers. Growth rates of some tree types continue to struggle in some areas. This combined with extended demand have created a reduced number of tall trees in parts of the market for this season and possibly next. The wet weather of 2023 and this spring have also seen mortality rates for many growers reach as high as 30% this year compared to the traditional 3-5% usually realized in a given cycle. Despite the adversity, farmers including BHF are finding ways to overcome these obstacles and provide fresh, fragrant Christmas trees for this season and many to come. We appreciate sharing in your family traditions and look forward to seeing everyone very soon. For now, we hope that you are enjoying everything that the fall season has to offer!
Balsam Hill Farm Update 12/15
With heartfelt thanks to our many customers and friends who visited with us at Balsam Hill Farm so far this season, we have made the decision to close the choose-and-cut fields so that sufficient crop can be preserved for future seasons. If you are a customer with a pre-flagged tree, you may still cut your tree at the predetermined date. There is still a selection of fragrant balsam fir Christmas trees in our pre-cut area that are ranging in size up to 6 feet plus. The Unique and Unusual field (Charlie Brown field) will remain open today, Sunday, December 15th for those who would like to venture there. The farm is open from 10am until 4pm or until sold out. Thank you so much and Happy Holidays from everyone at BHF!
Final Day for Choose-and-Cut at Balsam Hill Farm?
It has been a whirlwind of activity over the past two weeks here at Balsam Hill Farm. We have had a chance to visit with our long time customers and friends and meet some new ones. The busy nature of the shorter holiday season this year has created the need to close some of the choose-and-cut fields for the season. Today, Saturday, December 14th we will have open only two cutting fields, the Red field (also home to the Charlie Brown lot) and the Blue field. A decision will be made at the end of the day about having the fields open on Sunday, December 15th. These fields have limited selection but still offer the chance to find the perfect Christmas tree. There is also a nice selection of fragrant balsam fir Christmas trees that are pre-cut and ready for decorating as well as a selection of Maine-made wreaths to complete you holiday decor. As always, everyone at BHF appreciates the opportunity to share in your holiday tradition. Thank you for supporting this small Maine business and Happy Holidays.
Weather Delay at Balsam Hill Farm for Sunday, December 8th
The opening time at Balsam Hill Farm is being pushed back to approximately 11:30am today, Sunday December 8th, to allow the snow crew a chance to get some cleanup work done after the storm begins to subside. The farm will be open until the regular time of 4pm this afternoon. We will update the page if any changes become necessary. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we work to keep the farm safe for our customers and friends. Happy Holidays!
Balsam Hill Farm – Chilly Weekend – Tree Tips
It is going to be a sunny yet chilly start to the weekend at Balsam Hill Farm with some snow possible for Sunday morning. There is still a nice selection of fragrant balsam fir Christmas trees available in both pre-cut and choose-and-cut varieties. Fresh Maine-made wreaths are available to help complete your holiday decor. When preparing your tree for indoor display, don’t forget to take a fresh cut from the base of the stem to open wood fibers and allow maximum water intake. Keep your tree away from heat sources and from windows that take full sun for all or most of the day to prevent over-drying as it can be a safety concern. Try to give your tree a good shake or two before bringing it inside to allow for loose material to dislodge and fall out. This will reduce cleanup and improve appearance. Everyone at BHF is looking forward to another festive and face paced weekend and we want to thank all of our customers and friends who have made the trip to the hill. Your support of this small Maine business is sincerely appreciated. Happy Holidays!
Balsam Hill Farm Week of 12/2-12/6
By popular request again this year, Balsam Hill Farm will be open Monday through Friday using the honor system. This process has worked reasonably in the past and we would very much like to offer to our customers who work weekends or have other obligations an opportunity to choose their perfect Christmas tree. Pre-cut fragrant balsam fir Christmas trees are available for purchase from 10am-4pm. The cutting fields are closed for this event. Please do not cut trees from the field. Prices for trees and wreaths are as marked. Payment in full by check or cash can be placed in the red honor box at the entrance to the pre-cut area. Twine is available to help secure your tree on dry days. As always, thank you to all of our customers and friends and Happy Holidays!
